LOL!!! If you would ask this, you obviously haven't listened to the show!!! The last thing in the world I would EVER, EVER do is encourage Republican behavior!!

I don't know how non-Orthodox Jews can be Republicans, with the way the Republican party in the US is dominated by evangelical Christians. Quite frankly, Jews who vote Repugnican make me sick.

Hi Eric and Raya,

I'm a new listener from Perth, Australia. I discovered the show through Israelisms with Charley and Carol and have spent the last week catching up with old episodes. You are both awesome!

In a sense I think that the Jewish community in Perth is very much like the one in Alabama in the sense that we are about 8000 people in a city of over a million people. We are very well represented within the wider community though and are respected by them.

There isn't really a conservitive movement (in the Jewish sense) here though and even though we have 6 Shules they are either Orthodox, Reform or Chabad and I don't really feel comfortable in any of them so I only tend to go on High Holidays. That being said we have great facilities...3 kosher food stores/butchers and restaurants...so all that is there if one is interested. What are the facilities like in Alabama?

Anyway...I'm waffling...keep up the great work and I'll keep listening.

All the best,

Joel

Hi Joel--

Thanks for writing!! We can talk a little bit more about this on the next show....but there are roughly 5000 Jews in all of Alabama, a state with around 4.5 million people.

In the Birmingham metro area (around a million people), I believe there are around 3000 Jews. We have three shuls and a Chabad House, plus a large Jewish Community Center, a Jewish Day School, Family Services, and Federation.

We do not have any kosher restaurants or butchers, except for the summer-only snack bar at the JCC. However, you can find pre-packaged kosher meat in some of our groceries, particularly those located in the more Jewish sections of town.

Thanks for writing!
Eric
